Welcome to the Forest Green School Parent Council Blog. Council is excited and eager about this new means of communication! Special thanks to Mr. Couros for setting this up so quickly. The goal of this blog will be information sharing and gathering. We understand many parents are not able to make the council meetings on a regular basis, but your input and thought is still of value.
Many of you may wonder, what is school council? A School Council is a collective association of parents, teachers, principals, staff and community representatives who work together to effectively support and enhance student learning.
School councils provide one means for members of the school community to provide advice to, and consult with the principal and to advise the school board. School Council is separate from the fundraising body, and we are thankful that Forest Green has parents to make up both.
Council meetings are held once a month, set for the first Tuesday of the month at 3:30pm. We would be very interested in knowing if you would like to participate in the meetings, and if another time is more suitable for the majority.
The times are changing, and more parent involvement is encouraged in schools. This means going above and beyond classroom volunteering. While listening to the Minister of Education speak at the ASCA Conference he said the issue of the new School Act is just around the corner, maybe even within the next month! For the first time the School Act will define the role of a parent. Educators and communities across the province are excited to see schools becoming a collaborative system. This is where you as a parent get to come in! The old saying rings true: “It takes a village to raise a child”.
For more involvement please feel free to attend our next meeting, and those to come. The next meeting will be held May 3, 2011 at 3:30pm. Just a note on behalf of the Fundraising Society, their Annual General Meeting will be held prior at 2:30pm. This meeting will mark the passing of new bylaws, and election will occur for new directors for the upcoming year. Positions for election are Chair, Vice-Chair (2 are needed), Secretary, and Treasurer.
